Paintings 2018

My extensive research into the ancient cultures of the Middle East has revealed successive patterns of myth, legend and history based on a balance and harmony between the feminine and masculine, a balance undermined by monotheistic (male dominated) religions.

In this context, my paintings of textile sculptures are an attempt to redress that imbalance and produce harmony where the fabric serves as a symbol of women’s labour and is experienced through the traditionally male medium of painting.

Using a vocabulary of motifs, fabric, buttons, embroidery and threads I create an ambiguous object that floats within the setting of the canvas.

The titles name female deities from many cultures of the ancient past and are chosen to reflect the shared qualities of the deity and the subject matter of the paintings.
