Paintings 2018
My current series of paintings ‘Fetishes for Uncertain Times’ have been developed from research into the characteristics of ancient female deities whose scant pictorial authority has enabled me to freely develop my own images with reference only to the written descriptions of each deity. The paintings then function also as language.
I have chosen to render my images as textile forms acknowledging the enduring association of the female with the production of cloth and taking the qualities of individual deities as my starting point I create an abstract form and through a process of decision making develop highly decorative details.
In creating a realistic painting of an abstract object I aim to turn abstraction on its head and challenge the viewer to question the nature of the painted object.
