Oil Paintings 2022

I select the subject matter for my paintings from the things that catch my eye as I walk or travel. Often landscape or botanical in origin I focus on particular aspects that resonate with me in some way and elicit a physical response be it playful or sinister. Extracting elements I create stripped back paintings that whilst disassociated from their origins retain something of the resonance I initially felt. Colour is important too as it is what often first catches my eye. For added interest I often use patterns found in flowers, bird eggs and other natural forms to replace the original. I aim to create paintings that are organic in structure, informed by nature but abstracted and broken free of pure representation.

I make quick watercolour and ink sketches from phone photos and remembered images then work them up into finished paintings in my studio using oil paints.
